Active Member Death

Definition: An “Active Death” or “Ordinary Death” is when a member dies in active service or while on an authorized leave without pay and the death is not the result of an accident occurring while in the actual performance of duty.

The Hybrid, Noncontributory and Contributory plans have specific death benefits for members who die while in active service, and Hybrid and Contributory active death benefits differ based on a member’s date of ERS membership. The following information summarizes death benefits under the various plans; however, as each individual’s situation is unique, you should contact the ERS directly if you have member-specific questions.
